Carry-On Buying Guide
Hardside vs. Softside
Hardside: Better protection for fragile items, easier to clean, water-resistant. Heavier and may crack under extreme pressure.
Softside: More flexible for squeezing into tight spaces, often lighter, expandable options available. Less protection, can absorb liquids.
Wheels: Spinner vs. Inline
Spinner (4-wheel): Rolls in any direction, less arm strain, best for smooth floors. More fragile and takes up interior space.
Inline (2-wheel): More durable, handles curbs and rough surfaces better, recessed wheels save interior space.
Weight Matters
With airline weight limits (often 15-22 lbs for carry-ons), every pound of bag weight means less packing capacity. Lightweight bags under 6 lbs give you more flexibility.
Carry-On Packing Capacity
A typical 20-22" carry-on holds:
- 3-5 days of clothing (rolled to save space)
- 1-2 pairs of shoes (wear bulkiest pair)
- Toiletries (TSA 3-1-1 compliant)
- Electronics and chargers
- Light jacket or sweater
